Our golden treasure - Sunni
Our team is reflective today as we remember Sunni, the Koné family’s beautiful golden retriever and our company’s senior office dog who was laid to rest last night after 16 years of companionship and service. Befitting of her name, “Sunni” means “gold” in Mandingo, the language of Sekou’s home territory in Côte d’Ivoire.
It was a golden moment when Sunni joined the Koné family as a puppy – a first for Sekou, who, having grown up in Côte d’Ivoire, never owned a dog. The family adopted Sunni through a DSHS co-worker of Alicia’s; a year earlier, colleague Christina Watson had adopted puppy Cooper – Sunni’s older “sister” (Cooper passed on three years ago). The two were fast friends.
“Sunni was exceedingly patient helping us raise three boys and also was the pack leader for several cats and two other family dogs,” shared Alicia, “even on our worst days she was loving and loyal.” Gentle to the core, Sunni was always up for a treat, greeting KC staff with friendly nosy-nudges and often found warming a lucky person’s feet during staff meetings.
As we recognize the joy and companionship our furry family members provide and mourn Sunni’s loss, our thoughts are with others who are also grieving lost pets today. In that spirit, we encourage you to consider ways to honor your own beloved pets through a donation to your local humane society or food bank.
Rest In Peace Sunni, we love you.
