Virtual college tips

At Koné Consulting, four of our employees are college students. The traditional college experience is a thing of the past. As COVID-19 has pushed us all to accommodate a virtual learning environment, it is leaving many students feeling overwhelmed and anxious. As interns, our college-enrolled team members have been able to utilize some organizational tools to make the best of their virtual college life. Isaac, Zoumi, Katharina, and Madison wanted to share some tips for those who are struggling in asynchronous environments.

1.     Find and utilize online tools that work for you.

This is one of the top pieces of advice from our team members. As KC employees, we have access to Microsoft Office 365, with Outlook Calendar and OneNote being two programs that are being used daily. Learning efficient methods for notetaking is crucial for optimizing your workflow and Isaac suggests finding a method to take the “meat” out of your lectures instead of writing verbatim. Additionally, Zoumi says using a virtual calendar can assist in blocking out time in your schedule to organize and prioritize tasks. Digital organization comes with a plethora of advantages, from being able to share your calendar with collaborators as well as decreasing paper waste.

2.     Prioritize self-care.

In addition to organizing academics and work flow, it is important to schedule time for self-care. Something as simple as blocking off an hour to make yourself a healthy lunch or short yoga breaks in-between Zoom calls can make a big difference. Start with what feels good for you and remember that you have to take care of yourself before showing up for others. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a student, working from home for the first time, or supporting someone who is, caring about time management is caring for your well-being” says Katharina.

At the end of the day, it will take some trial and error to find the tools that work for you. In the meantime, we can help each other by maintaining a compassionate and understanding mindset, and sharing what tools we find useful. Our Koné students encourage you to continue prioritizing finding balance between work, school and personal time that’s optimal for you (and then blocking off that time unapologetically!).
