Sainte Genevieve Welcome Center:

A Sanctuary for the Most Vulnerable

Father Germaine and residents at St. Genevieve with Koné tour group in 2020.

Nestled in the heart of Katiola, Orphelinat Sainte Genevieve is more than just an orphanage. It is a sanctuary for children who have nowhere else to turn. Founded in 2011 by Father Germaine, the orphanage was born out of a desperate need to protect children at risk of infanticide and abandonment due to harmful traditional beliefs. In some local communities, twins, children with disabilities, and those whose mothers died in childbirth are tragically seen as bearers of misfortune. Father Germaine, together with social worker Habiba Koné, established vigilance committees to identify and rescue these at-risk children, offering them a safe haven and a chance at life.

Since its inception, Orphelinat Sainte Genevieve has welcomed and cared for over 140 children, providing them with far more than the basics. Today, the center is home to 43 children and young adults, reflecting its expanded mission to support residents as they grow into adulthood. Each resident receives nutritious meals, comprehensive medical care, and access to education - essentials that empower them to build brighter futures. The orphanage operates as a close-knit family, with separate dormitories for boys and girls, and a dedicated team including a full-time cook and housekeeper who ensure the well-being of every child. Beyond meeting daily needs, the staff and volunteers offer the warmth, encouragement, and guidance that every child deserves.

As the needs of the community evolve, so too does the center’s commitment. With a growing number of young adults, the orphanage now provides adult-sized supplies and tailored support to help each resident transition confidently into the next stage of life. The center also continues to expand its facilities, welcoming new residents and extending its reach to more children in need.

At Orphelinat Sainte Genevieve, every child and young adult is given the opportunity to reclaim their childhood, pursue their education, and dream of a future filled with hope and possibility. The center’s work is made possible by the generosity of supporters around the world who believe, as we do, that every child deserves love, dignity, and opportunity.

This year, we are aiming to raise $6,000 USD to cover nutritious meals, medical attention, school fees, and clothing - including urgently needed adult items for our older residents, as well as the annual Christmas celebration for residents. We are extra excited this year because we will be able to provide the donations in-person during our October visit.
