World Tourism Day 2020: Tourism and rural development
This year’s theme for United Nations World Tourism Day - Tourism & Rural Development – resonates deeply with us at Koné Consulting, especially as we embark on planning for our December 2021/January 2022 Service, Learning, Lean-In tour to Côte d’Ivoire (CI), Africa.
Spearheading the celebration, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) shares our travel principles from which we’ve developed our tours and hold dear:
· Cultural exchange and unique experiences – Tourism plays an important role in preserving and promoting culture and heritage around the world, particularly in rural communities.
· Empowering women and youth - Tourism provides jobs and opportunity, most notably for women and youth, leading to gender equality and economic security.
· Leading through learning – Tourism offers opportunities to develop community members’ skills through mentor and education partnerships.
As economic benefits from agriculture are diminishing and traditional ways of life are under threat from climate change, the UNWTO emphasizes investment in rural communities with a goal toward tourism must ensure rural areas have strong technology infrastructure and fair-wage jobs and fair-trade programs and products.
To this end, we at Koné Consulting continue to invest in and collaborate with our African partners in Côte d’Ivoire: Women Entrepreneurs and Leaders (WEL NGO) and the Katiola Welcome Center (providing shelter, education and family reunification for children birth - 25) for whom we have raised funds to provide technical equipment, tools and expertise.
2020 marks the 40th anniversary of World Tourism Day, which is celebrated annually on September 27th.
