The Côte d’Ivoire presidential election

This week, many have their attention set on the U.S. presidential election. It may be one of the biggest elections for the world media, and for good reason. But the U.S election is not the only one that is happening right now nor the only one where human rights weigh in the balance. Côte d’Ivoire will have their election on Saturday, October 31st. President Alassane Ouattara announced he will be running for a third term and the constitutional council rejected 40 candidates. The opposing parties then coordinated and called for civil disobedience in protest to what they believe is the illegitimate third term of President Ouattara. Ouattara’s party believes his first term in office doesn’t count because it was held before the constitution was adopted. The presidential party responded by banning all demonstrations. So far, 18 people have died in altercations between Ouattara supporters and opposition since August. The political climates of Côte d’Ivoire and the U.S share some similarities, so we encourage you to pay attention to both elections if you are able to.
