Visions of sun and surf
It seems a little escapism is in order, so this week we’re visualizing the beach in Grand Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, the warm sand between our toes, rhythmic crash of the waves, beautiful blue sky and lounging lizards on white painted palms.
Not far from the ample bar, thick padded beach lounges beckon and a refreshing breeze offers respite from a week in the hot savannah. Sweat tickling the neck is soon forgotten when an umbrella drink is applied, complimented by a platter of succulent fresh fruit – pineapple, melon and papaya.
Looking out with drooping eyes, vendors selling everything from colorful beach wraps, artisan jewelry and coconut water still in the nut parade along the beach alone and in pairs. As the afternoon slips into evening, the cicadas start their serenade. Bats swoop and dart among the palms, and sweet slumber begins to look like a very productive endeavor indeed.
