The loss of an Ivorian presidential candidate
In the wake of the sudden death of Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly, the chosen presidential candidate from the current ruling party, Cote d’Ivoire has been catapulted into a state of political uncertainty. With the election taking place in October, President Ouattara is scrambling to find another candidate to represent his party. There are many potential candidates eager to take the late prime minister’s place, but whomever is chosen will run against experienced competition. Among the favorites are Patrick Achi, the current spokesman for President Ouattara, and Hamed Bakayoko, the current defense minister.
Amid rumors of who will be the official candidate, there is also speculation that President Ouattara will run for a third term in office. Though this decision would not go against the constitution, there is still residual tension between opposing parties who would like to see a new president in office, arguing that the constitution does not allow Ouattara to run again. President Ouattara has played a very important role in rebuilding the Ivorian economy after the civil war that ensued as a result of his election in 2011. Since then, we have seen years of relative peace and economic growth that is providing stability for the people of Cote d’Ivoire.
We will keep you updated in future blog posts as more information about the candidates/election becomes available.
