During my spring break, I was fortunate enough to have a long weekend getaway planned to Bainbridge Island, WA. Despite being a Washington resident of 20 years, I had never visited Bainbridge before. My mom and I stayed at an Airbnb loft just outside of the downtown area and spent the weekend slowing down to rest and be present while getting to know another part of WA.

If quarantine has taught me anything, it is to appreciate and value the downtime. Below is a small gallery of some Bainbridge Island snapshots I took while venturing. Photos include sights from Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Esther’s Fabrics, and the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, and a small beach next to our Airbnb.

The visit to the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial really touched me. The increase of Asian hate crimes and loss of life in so many communities has been at the forefront of my mind lately. The memorial was a place where I could honor others as well as my own experiences as a Chinese-American woman. A short video of my adventure will be shared in a later blog, so if you’d interested please stay tuned! -Katharina
