It's cat season

Spring brings new flowers for gardens, leaves for the trees, and new opportunities for the world. It is a time for growth and change. It is also representative of fertility, the building of family.

About 4 weeks ago, Zoumi added two new furry additions to his family. Juju and Willow are 11-week old kittens were born to a family who didn’t neuter or spay their cats. Spring came and all of a sudden this family had a litter of fur balls that needed a home. This is not uncommon as many shelters see an increase in kittens needing a home around this time of year. Juju and Willow are rambunctious as toddlers who just learned how to walk on their own. They are full of curiosity, energy and life, and they look at the world through a new perspective that you can’t help but look through yourself. Kittens can be a lot of work to take care of when they are that young, but as time goes on they become a part of the family like they have always been there.

Last week, Isaac also added a new furry addition to his family. Unlike Zoumi’s kittens, Kiki is a 7 year old rescue cat from the Whatcom Feline Alliance. She was rescued from total neglect that caused her to lose an eye and be severely obese. When she was first rescued, the foster parent described her as being a 20 pound “jelly roll” that could not walk on her own. Fast forward 6 months, now she is 13 pounds and being loved by Isaac and his 6 other roommates. Spring may not have brought Isaac a newborn kitten, but it has brought growth and change for both him and Kiki.

There are plenty of kittens and adult cats (as well as other types of animals) in shelters waiting for new homes and families during this spring season. Consider growing your family and help give these pets fresh starts in loving homes, or even donating to a shelter in your area so they can continue to serve the pet community.

In Washington there are two popular shelters, the north end has PAWS and the south end has RASKC.

If finding a local shelter seems to be a daunting task, then visit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) who is the national leader in animal rescue and advocacy.
