Happy Earth Day!
Today marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day began as a response to a record oil spill and lead to demonstrations of support for environmental protection and the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Earth Day is now observed by more than 1 billion people every year in more than 190 countries.
Earth Day looks different this year. The COVID-19 pandemic has literally given the earth an opportunity to breathe easier due to a reduction in air pollution as people are staying home and travel has dramatically reduced. Improving air quality this quickly would have seemed impossible not long ago but now serves as a lesson and a challenge to reassess “business as usual.” There are also reports of cleaner water and a return of wildlife in places where humans are suddenly absent.
It is very appropriate that the theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action. There are digital options on how to take action and also opportunities to hike (yes, virtually!), play environmental games, conduct experiments, meet scientists, and pollinate flowers – all without leaving home. I hope you all take a moment today to celebrate the earth.
Take good care,
Karin
