Partner spotlight: Ty Cox

As we transition into this new year of 2021, we can’t help but look back and remember all the struggles we experienced not only as a community, but as a nation. Though we at Koné are welcoming the new year with open arms and hopeful hearts, it’s understandable that others are skeptical. But that is why we want to share one of our astounding and inspiring partners in this Partner Spotlight: Ty Cox.

Ty Cox got her undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia and then went on to Howard University School of Law, where she graduated in 2005. Upon graduating from law school, she began working as a legal aid attorney in Virginia, where she found herself inspired to change the lives of the clients she represented through systemic policy change. After digging into public benefits, she saw an opportunity to join the Virginia Poverty Law Center as the Public Benefits Staff Attorney where she really began to witness the true power of policy advocacy and how it can change systemic issues that restrict families from receiving the help they need. In 2010 she joined the Food Assistance team at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) in Washington, DC, where her focus shifted to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It was at CBPP that Ty Cox met Alicia Koné through the Work Support Strategies initiative, where she was responsible for using grants from the Ford Foundation to help SNAP, TANF, Child Care and Medicaid benefits be distributed to eligible individuals and families more efficiently. Ty continued on to other positions in the policy and anti-hunger spaces including the Director of Policy at Benefits Data Trust in Philadelphia, PA and Senior Advisor of Food Security at the AARP Foundation in Washington, DC. In both roles, Ty continued her work to connect eligible families to needed assistance by working with state agencies and advocate partners to streamline access. Eventually, Ty celebrated the opening of her own consulting firm, Ty Cox Consulting, LLC in August of 2019. Currently, Ty is Koné Consulting’s CalRules writing partner, where she continues her legacy of helping others and inspiring the rest of us to do the same.

Outside of her important work in policy, Ty is also an incredible mother who loves dancing with her daughter and supporting her science interests with baking soda and vinegar volcanoes (a sudden staple in the Cox household), as well as playing video games to unwind from a long day.

One of Ty’s favorite quotes comes from Fannie Lou Hamer, an African American voting and womens’ rights activist and co-founder of the Freedom Democratic Party, which states, “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” As we step into the light of a new year, we hope to learn from our experiences and remember how true that quote rings while we fight for equal rights for those who are still being denied. Building off her talents to help those suffering around her, we are honored to spotlight a marvelous role model - Ty Cox.
