Empowered women: Sanata Touré

Welcome to our second story in our series featuring young women who have been empowered by WEL NGO. We are happy to have them as partners as we work to solve the social problem of inequity in income and opportunities around the world. You can support WEL NGO and the women they empower by going to our African Art House page and making a donation.

My name is Sanata Touré and I am 20 years old. I was born the second youngest in a family of 7 children. My father passed away when I was a baby so I was raised in my mother’s village called Sakassou. It is in the central region of Côte d'Ivoire not too far from Bouaké.

When I was finishing high school in 2018, I got a chance to participate in a program called ''Impact my Community” hosted by WEL NGO. That leadership program was a series of training sessions created for young women in college. Its goal was to help empower young women and lead them on a path of success in a world dominated by men. They encouraged us to avoid early pregnancies, assisted us in career planning, and facilitated interactions with some of the most inspiring women leaders of our community.

This program motivated me to be a better version of myself. I understood that financial dependance is the main root of gender-based violence. I decided to prioritize my professional career no matter what the obstacles were.

During that period, I was abandoned by my family. I was about to give up. It was hard at school. My family problems were negatively affecting my grades.

When I met the president of WEL NGO during the ''Impact my Community” program, I felt energized. I understood that it was still possible to achieve something in my life no matter what my identity was. It was so important for me to find someone who could listen to me and encourage me.

I thank WEL NGO for those training sessions on Women Leadership and Career planning.

That same year I got my degree (BAC) and I have graduated with a degree in human resource management and communication (BTS). My biggest dream is to create some charity restaurants (Restos du Coeur) in Africa for the homeless, orphans, and low-income people. I believe that nobody should be hungry. I know what it's like to grow up as an orphan.

I am convinced that my dream will come true if I continue to get coaching and mentoring from WEL NGO.

WEL NGO will always have my gratitude for the work they do for young girls and vulnerable people.
